Academic Overview
We take pride in our strong academic reputation. Over the past four years, our school has consistently improved its academic state scores even though 98% of our students are at-risk students, dropouts, and children already involved in the juvenile justice system. However, not all of our students are at-risk and some come from as far as Gregory-Portland, Taft, and Flour Bluff. Our academic day is 4 or 5 hours depending on the student's schedule. For the past three years, we have received an "acceptable" rating from the state. The Dr. ML Garza Gonzalez Charter School has never had an unacceptable rating since it's inception in 1980. We are perpetually preparing our district and campuses to help our students pass the rigorous state-mandated TAKS test and achieve a fully accredited education. We are accredited through the State Education Agency (TEA) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Through extensive Staff Development, exclusive programs, and teacher mentoring we hope to improve our teaching and testing skills each academic year.

Our classroom instruction is based on the TEKS mandated by the State of Texas with emphasis being placed on the TAKS examination. This classroom instruction is powered by the new ESC 2 Curriculum Collaborative which is the backbone of our core curriculum. For more information on the curriculum please visit the ESC 2 website. Our classrooms are equipped with 5 computer terminal sites in each classroom, a 30 computer technology lab and a 20 computer tutorial lab in which students may log on to our extensive Plato system or other tutorial programs. Plato is the same system used by our local Del Mar College.
Because of our committment to helping students, we have been successful for many years with graduating students who might not have graduated at other programs. Our success is not only because of our academics, but also due to caring staff, and people dedicated to ensuring student success.
