Superintendent's Notes
January, 9, 2007
Welcome to the Gulf Coast Council of La Raza, Inc. and Dr. M.L.Garza-Gonzalez Charter School website. It is exciting to start a new year with a feeling of having completed many tasks and commitments in education and in social work in our community. We pledge to continue the good work and to gradually increase the level of services our agency and school provide in this community and surrounding areas.

We start the 2007 new year with a full agenda which includes TAKS preparation and with the goal to increase student achievement in all areas. At this writing the school has an enrollment of 260. Of this number, 140 students are pre-K and Kindergarten and the other 120 students are middle school and high school students. Our full cafeteria service provides breakfast and lunch for all the students who wish to eat here.

Our Board of Directors has been very busy providing guidance and assistance in the completion of Agency and School tasks. A new state-of-the art Playground was obtained for the pre-K and the Kindergarten children. A sidewalk has been constructed linking the end of the school building and the area of the playground. The CISCO (technology) students are preparing for the end-of-the year tests and others are preparing to register at Del Mar College and continue their technology training. The school inaugurated a brand new library fully equipped with a document camera, DVD/VCR combo, laptop computer, video projector with screen, speakers, and a mobile cart. The library has computers, printers, copier, scanning devices, and internet services to allow students to conduct research and to become technologically advanced. The library is also stocked with $141,000 worth of books, magazines, and media equipment that serve the entire school personnel, the students, and provides for parental and community involvement. The library is open from 8:00am to 9:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Mondays and Fridays the library is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

I sincerely thank the Board of Directors, Administrative, teaching, and all auxiliary staff for an excellent professional work performed the first semester of this school year.

We wish a safe, healthy, and happy new year 2007 to all the Corpus Christi community including our students and friends in surrounding areas. We hope and encourage more people to stop and visit our agency and school at your convenience. You need no appointment, remember, YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!
