- What is a Charter School?
- According to the Texas Education Code, the purposes of charter schools are to (1) improve student learning; (2) increase the choice of learning opportunities within the public school system; (3) create professional opportunities that will attract new teachers to the public school system; (4) establish a new form of accountability for public schools; and (5) encourage different and innovative learning methods.
- Is there a tuition fee at any of the GCCLR charter campuses?
- No, there is no tuition fees to attend any GCCLR campus. GCCLR and all of its campuses are TEA supported public charter schools. However, TEA has set regulations on free prekindergarten children. Call to see if your child qualifies. Most children in this area have qualified.
- Will my child be served meals
- Yes, most students that attend the GCCLR campuses qualify for free or reduced breakfast, lunch, and a snack. If you would like, you may download a free application now by clicking here and downloading it to your computer.
- Who may attend school at GCCLR?
- Any child that is 3 - 5 years old may attend school at GCCLR. Open registration usually occurs the month prior to the beginning of the school year and is on a first come first serve basis. If capacity is reached, students are then placed on a waiting list. We have one kindergarten class (18 students) and 6 PreKindergarten classes (21 students).
- There are two requirements in addition to the TEA requirements listed above: 1) all students must be potty-trained before they attend school. 2) all students must be able to take a nap during the day.
- What must I bring for registration?
- Is there a dress code?
- Early Childhood does not have a dress code policy. Parents are urged to make sure that the child is dressed appropriately for the days activities and weather. Parents are also encouraged to bring a blanket for the child for nap time. see the PreK Student Handbook.
- If my child passes kindergarten, may they continue to attend GCCLR?
- No, currently GCCLR only offers grades PreK, K, and 6-12.
- May I attend any of the campuses at GCCLR.
- Yes, students are accepted for enrollment at either location on a first come first serve basis after the initial enrollment period. If space is not available, students will then be placed on a waiting list.
- Is transportation provided to and from school?
- PreK and Kindergarten students must be transported by a parent or guardian to and from school. Only persons on the emergency contact card may pick up the student.
- What makes your prekindergarten program different than headstart or daycare?
- The GCCLR prekindergarten and kindergarten programs are not daycare facilities, they are educational learning environments that follow strict guidelines from TEA that stress a curriculum based on phonetic awareness, listening comprehension, speech production and speech discrimination, vocabulary, verbal expression, print and book awareness, letter knowledge and early word recognition, motivation to read, developing knowledge of Literary forms, written expression, and other criteria for Math, Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts, Health, Personal and Social Development, Physical Development, and Technology Applications.
- I live in __________, but would like to attend GCCLR because of the location or the hours required, may I attend also?
- Absolutely yes, (call for geographical boundries) GCCLR would like to encourage any and all students in the area to attend our campuses. We will try to accomodate you at the location that is most convenient for you.
- Are all of the teachers at GCCLR certified to teach their subject area?
- All teachers at GCCLR have Texas certificates to teach. Some teachers that have bachelor's degrees have not attended a teaching program, but TEA allows charter schools to allow teachers to test in their areas of expertise and then are certified by TEA in that subject only.
- Teacher's aides must have at least 60 hours to become a teacher's aide and must demonstrate competency to assist a teacher in his or her classroom.
