Dr. M.L Garza Gonzalez Charter School
The Dr. ML Garza Gonzalez Charter School ha consistantly performed to state standards even though the majority of students that attend are considered "at risk". We accomplish these goals with constant Staff Development, innovative and effective teaching strategies, and student counseling, and flexible scheduling.
This campus offers students 4 or 5 hour class schedules (depending on student needs). We have two shifts available (7:50 - 12:15 and 12:15 - 4:30). The morning shift allows students to complete their day of school and return home early to go to work or help their family. The afternoon shift allows students who have a hard time getting up early and opportunity to attend later. Both shifts offer the same curriculum.
This year we have been designated under NCLB as "not meeting the AYP for Math". This means that our school did not score above the required 40% minimum to meet AYP for Math only. Therefore, our school has implemented a plan to improve our scores. We now require that all students who do not have prior TAKS scores in math, take a TAKS released test. If the student does not perform to standards, the student will be required to attend classes one additional hour. We have also hired a new math teacher and would like to hire an additional teacher so that we could implement a team-teaching strategy. We have sent out a letter to all students and parents informing of our policy change, failure to meet AYP for Math, and our efforts to increase our scores this year.
